Description

Tetracyclic triterpenoids called cucurbitacins, which are very oxidized compounds, are commonly used in traditional Chinese cures(Cucurbitaceae family), have potent antineoplastic activity. Cucurbitacins have more than 200 types of cucurbitacins derivatives. Cucurbitacin has 30 carbon skeleton which is a cucurbitane kind of saponin that is tetracyclic ring. Alphabetically from A to T cucurbitacins are divided. Studies on plant secondary metabolites have shown that the novel cucurbitacins are cucurbitacins E and B. The cucurbitacin B, D, I, E, L glucoside, R, and Q molecules are the most effective cucurbitacin molecules against cancer. The mechanism of action includes antiproliferation, inhibition of migration, and invasion of tumor cells. Moreover, it has been discovered that cucurbitacins block the signaling pathways for JAK-STAT3, Wnt, PI3K/Akt, and MAPK., which are critical for the survival and death of cancer cells. The cucurbitacins are predominantly found in the Curcurbitaceae family, and one such plant is Luffa echinata Roxb. It is an important source of bioactive metabolites and is used in several Ayurvedic formulations. This plant is traditionally used for the treatment of various diseases like intestinal colic, hepatitis, jaundice, anti-ulcer, and anti-cancer. In the present study whole fruit is extracted with different solvents and cucurbitacins are isolated for pharmacological studies.
