Description

Abstract: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative old aged, unalterable, complex and progressive disease in nature which causes around 70% of dementia cases in worldwide. According to WHO, around 55 million people are currently suffering with Alzheimer’s disease throughout the world. The presently approved therapies like cholinesterase inhibitors, NMDA receptor antagonists provide only temporary symptomatic relief rather than complete cure. So, efforts have been made by the researchers globally to identify new targets and develop novel therapeutic agents for the treatment of AD. Some new different targets like amyloids (secretases, Aβ42 production, amyloid deposition), tau proteins (phosphorylation/aggregation), metal chelation, neuroinflammation and miscellaneous targets along with immunotherapy shows promising result to combat with AD. Few well established and recently discovered biomarkers such as NfL, ptau217, YKL40, SNAP25 and Ng/BACE proteins detect AD at early stages and can monitor the disease progression. In addition, Nanoparticles (polymeric, metal and lipid) based approaches and neurosurgical procedure like tissue grafting, gene therapy, electrical neural stimulation are being widely investigated to improve the efficacy of both conventional and novel compounds and to treat AD. Though further studies are required to get a convenient treatment strategy but the current outcomes give a positive hope in near future to combat with the Alzheimer’s disease.
