Description

In the modern world, dementia is a major age-related neurodegenerative disorder, which has been encountered by around 55 million people with a sharp increase of 10 million new cases each passing year. This neurological issue is mainly occurred due to the generation of reactive oxygen species, formation of beta-amyloid plaque, decrease in acetylcholine or overproduction of acetylcholine esterase, and/or mutation in MAPT gene and the presence of APOE e4 gene. Scientists are trying to search for novel compounds to combat this increasing proportion of demented patients. Being nature is the richest source of herbal therapeutics, several reports are available in the literature stating the usefulness of flavonoids in the control of this condition. A few of the herbal compounds, e.g., galantamine and rivastigmine, are on the bedside of patients for the treatment of dementia. The present presentation is focused on flavonoids for their potential role in controlling such disease conditions. One of the promising flavonoids, naringin, a secondary metabolite mainly found in citrus fruit, has shown its potential in several preclinical research. It is converted to the active metabolite, naringenin, by hydrolysis in gut flora and becomes bioavailable. Several physiological roles of this phytoconstituent have been explored by several researchers including antioxidant, anticancer, lipid-lowering, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory activities, etc. In this presentation, the pathophysiology of dementia has been summarised with special emphasis on naringin/naringenin in the favourable modification of such conditions.
